Selena Gomez is not exactly what you call an activist, but when she believes in something, you can be sure it’s going up in one of her social media accounts (most probably Instagram because she’s the ‘queen’ of it).
Sure enough, following the mass walk-outs and protests in support of the #MarchOfOurLives and anti-gun violence movements throughout the country, the “Wolves” singer posted photos with protesters on Instagram, with the caption:
“I don’t want this to just be an Instagram post anymore. PLEASE. ENOUGH. These people, families and CHILDREN have suffered enough,” she captioned a photo showing herself and another attendant at the demonstration. “Today we march for our lives. I’m going to continue to trust god with the future and also play my part in bringing change.” And while that part of the post is well and good, it’s the hashtag, “#notjustahashtag,” she used that many people took issue with.
It’s all good and dandy, you know, the kind of celebrity PSA or awareness-sharing you’d double tap for on Instagram. But NO.
A fan was quick to point out that in 2016, at the height of the Kanye West/ Kim Kardashian vs. Taylor Swift feud, Gomez said there were more “important things to talk about” than the said feud and “Why can’t people use their voice for something that fucking matters?”
Replying to Gomez then, a fan asked her why she never spoke out about the Black Lives Matter movement (which also involves gun violence and police brutality), and this was her reply:
“Oh lol so that means if I hashtag something I save lives? NO—I could give two fucks about ‘sides.’ You don’t know what I do.”
Of course, now that Gomez is using one of the most controversial hashtags, and given her previous statements (or lack thereof) on important issues, people on the internet quickly jumped into the “Selena-Is-A-Hypocrite” fray.
the fact that she said “not just a hashtag” is literally implying that black lives matter is “”””just a hashtag””””. blm is a fully formed organization and movement with specific ideas for reform of police practices. and selena is a hypocrite. https://t.co/1GQz8lPEpY

If you hate her then let yourself shut up and concentrate in something else. People don’t have to adrift prejudice just because they don’t know the true reason behind it.
So leave @selenagomez to her #Selenators #CHOOSEEMPATHY pic.twitter.com/S4fsDz6RGY
