Seventeen years after the last Legally Blonde movie starring Reese Witherspoon as the sweet, smart and savvy lawyer, Elle Woods, talks are reportedly being held for Legally Blonde 3.
According to Deadline, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah (the people responsible for the film adaptation of the novel by Amanda Brown) are in “final talks” to write the script for the third installment of the Legally Blonde franchise.
“The scribes will begin writing immediately and the next step is to secure a director,” the online magazine reported.
While details about the plot are still underway, sources say Legally Blonde 3 will be “much in the spirit of the first film, in which Woods’ idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe prevailed over the cynicism and snootiness all around her after the freshly dumped former sorority sister heads to law school.”
Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon is reportedly “near a deal” with media company MCM to reprise her role in the film.
The 42-year-old actress is said to take the film under the wing of her own production company, Hello Sunshine, known for the films Gone Girl and Big Little Lies.
Reese had always expressed her willingness to return as Elle Woods.
In an interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show last year, Reese said it would be “cool” to see what Elle Woods would be up to.
“I think it’d be kind of cool to see her 15 years later, like what’s she doing now? What do you think? I don’t know. But I need a good idea,” she said.
Reese added, “She could be a Supreme Court justice or she could be like a really great, powerful attorney or she could be in prison. She could be anything!”
A Supreme Court justice in a pink garb? What. A. Concept!
We are SO ready to bend and snap!
