Serum is better than moisturizer — at least for one beauty writer.
Elaborate skincare regimens cropping up over the years have probably got you sticking to the ‘ol cleanse- tone- moisturize routine, but if it were up to Refinery29 writer Rachel Krause, she’d have you throwing in a serum or two in there.
“Sure, a moisturizer will do its job to hydrate and protect… but your serum is what does the thing you need,” she writes.
Serums, if you didn’t know yet, are concentrated concoctions that have specific targets in their formulation: hyperpigmention, inflammation-calming, soothing, wrinkle fighting, at-have-you, there’s probably a serum for that now in the market.
“A serum complements your other skin-care products and can be layered underneath them,” says dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, who Rachel talked with to get the gritty on these potions.
But if you’re a virgin to the serum application game, it’s helpful to first find out what you need a serum to do for you.
If it’s any of the skin issues mentioned above (remember, for more serious cases, like eczema or psoriasis, it’s best to check with your doctor) then go out and hunt the stores, honey!
Also just because we’re at it, try sticking with serums that promise to be gentle on skin, because even if you don’t have particularly sensitive skin, it’s still best to be on the side of caution, you know?
So now that you’ve armed yourself with the serum formulation you need most, how does one go about incorporating it into your skin care routine?
Rachel states that obviously, the first would be to cleanse. Whether you double cleanse or even triple it doesn’t matter that much, but for every step, make sure to do it gently!
” [Then] dry your face (gently, very gently). And while your skin is still a little damp, just before you moisturize, smooth on a few drops of your serum, like the ones Dr. Zeichner suggests ahead. Yes, it’s your serum now, and you’ll never want to be without it again,” says Rachel. Hmmm, with the colder months coming in, we’re pretty stoked to see what serums can do for our skin!
