So much tea! Letters from Prince Philip showed he supported Princess Diana during her messy divorce with Prince Charles.
It’s one royal scandal that the world just can’t seem to forget: prince marries beautiful, talented, charismatic and incredibly smart aristocrat, turns out he is unfaithful, and all hell (well, at least for the conservative British royal family) breaks loose.
We’re of course talking about the tumultuous marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, which ended in 1992 after years of speculation that the prince was unfaithful.
You’d think the royal family would be all over Prince Charles, who eventually married his paramour Camilla Parker Bowles, and be eager to cast the feisty Diana aside.
But it turns out, some of them had better sense.
Marie Claire reported that there exists a series of letters Prince Philip (aka Prince Charles’ dad) and Princess Diana, expressing that he took her side during the messy affair.
The Daily Mail found some of noteworthy bits that spoke about the divorce (which Prince Philip has signed “fondest love, Pa”), which included:
“I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla.”
As well as:
“Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”
The report added that the letters were originally leaked in 2003 by former royal butler Paul Burrell. The Sunday Times reported in that year that Prince Philip was attempting to block the publication of the letters, suggesting authenticity.
While Princess Diana and Prince Philip were not reported to have gotten along well (during her marriage to Philip, there were reports that he was “unkind” to her, according to CNN), behind closed doors, it appears he was there for Diana during the difficult divorce-to a degree at least.
The letters are a small deviation from speculation that the in-laws did not get along well, with reports saying that the prince was ‘unkind’ to his daughter-in-law behind closed doors.
But the kind words about the divorce were probably too much to hope for, because it also included this bit: “Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’s relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behaviour towards him in your marriage?”
Which of course, translates to “What did you do to make him act that way?” as if his son isn’t already a grown-ass man by then.
Of course, not everythin revealed in the supposed letters was positive. At one point, Philip allegedly wrote Diana asking, In other words: “Isn’t it kind of your fault he cheated on you?” Ugh.
